Some are more interesting than others, though. The storylines behind some of them are perfect for books and movies, which is what some of them are used for. Some of them you probably already know – Super Mario Bros, Resident Evil, Silent Hill, Assassin’s Creed, and others- adapted scenarios based on some of the best JRPGs.

In this article, we’re sharing the top five JRPG storylines you may or may not know. Their developers came out with fantastic ideas and managed to create games with stories that leave their fans breathless. Keep reading and see what they are.

1. The Yakuza series

If you’re aware of the Japanese criminal gangs, you have surely heard of the Yakuza. The Yakuza game series was developed back in 2005 by Sega and Deep Silver. The series continues until today, with the latest game published in 2021.

The Yakuza series features the main character Kazuma, a member of the infamous group, but turns wild when his boss tries to raip his childhood friend Yumi. Another friend murders the boss, but Kazuma takes the blame and spends ten years in prison, only to become the gang’s enemy when he comes out.

2. Final Fantasy VI

Every Final Fantasy game has its unique storyline, and they are all amazing when you look at them separately. This one is probably the best. Although too complex to explain thoroughly, the plot revolves around the magic-using woman named Terra.

As she and her fellow imperial soldiers fail on a mission, she returns stronger to conquer the opponents by summoning the best soldiers around her. The main opponent Kefka is worthy of her, and he is nearly successful, but the protagonists’ actions are victorious.

3. NieR: Automata

This one’s not for just anyone. Even the game’s trailer starts with the words, “Everything that lives is designed to end.” A highly nihilistic and nearly depressing storyline makes many people fall in love with its raw truth combined with the artificial worlds and imagination of the creators.

The main character is 2B, an android girl soldier that fights the resistance. However, in a series of events, she discovers that the war is nothing more than a charade and the robots from the resistance are pacifists. She also discovers that humanity doesn’t exist, and they are fighting an imaginary war to serve humanity that was long dead.

4. Persona 5

Persona 5 is a 2016 RPG that is developed by P-Studio. The plot happens in modern-day Tokyo and revolves around a student named Joker who transfers to a new school after being kicked out of the last one because he was charged with an assault.

The truth is that he didn’t attack anyone but was protecting a woman from assault. In the new city, he meets Igor, who grants him access to the metaverse, where he gets unusual power to take the corruption out of people’s hearts. He’s not alone, though, but a group of friends works with him to reform the city.

5. Chrono Trigger

Chrono Trigger is one of the RPG classics. This game was developed and published in 1995 by Square, and its plot is outstanding. Everything starts in the imaginary Kingdom of Guardia in 1000 AD when a teleportation device is shown to the citizens.

However, the process goes wrong when a girl gets sucked inside the machine, after which the main characters go inside too to find her through time. They end up in 600 AD but eventually travel through time to as far as 2300 AD and 12,000 BC. They need to solve and defeat many enemies to retrieve the girl.
